The Hardest Decision You Will Make As a Pet Owner |

As a pet owner, there are so many joys we get from our dogs and cats. They are there in the hard times and give us hours of enjoyment coupled with companionship. Animals, sadly have a shorter lifespan than we do, which means at some point it is likely to deal with the inevitable fact they will die. They may get sick or just be getting old, but the hardest decision you will have to make is if and when you should put down your beloved pet. Considerations have to be made when choosing whether or not it is time to put down a pet. Some argue if euthanizing an animal is even a choice that is up to the owner. However, there are instances in which putting your animal to sleep is the most human decision you can make. Think about your animals quality of life and the life they have lead. If your pet has been battling an illness for some time and the outlook is dire, it may be time to consider ending their pain and suffering. Euthanizing a cat when it has leukemia, for instance, may be the best option available. For animal owners that don’t have money to get treatments or if their pet is older it may make sense to let them go on in peace instead of dragging out another few months of agony. In most cases, your vet will tell you their opinion on whether or not treatment will be useful or if your putting off the inevitable and should consider the alternative. There are two ways you can put a pet to sleep, one is at a veterinary clinic, and the other option is at your home. For most pet owners even choosing to euthanize is extremely difficult and watching their animal die is too much to bear, which is why many opt for going to the clinic. However, consider where you pet spent much of their time and was at their happiest. Pets deserve to die being surrounding by their loved ones, and in a setting that is familiar to them, it is more comforting. While many don’t like to think about their fur baby passing on, it is something you may have to do. But it is an act of compassion. When your pet can no longer enjoy life, is too sick to get up and play or has a hard time doing regular activities it could be time to put them to sleep and say goodbye.
